Full job description

Community UMC is both an active church and a weekday preschool/childcare environment. Maintaining cleanliness here means caring for a large, multi-use facility that serves staff, children, families, visitors, and worshippers. We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Custodian to join our team. The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in keeping all areas of our facility clean, safe, and welcoming. This is a first-shift position with steady daytime hours, working while classrooms and church spaces are in use.

Key Duties

• Perform daily classroom cleaning, including toys, desks, and floors

• Clean and maintain the sanctuary, choir room, offices, restrooms, and all other church spaces

• Complete routine tasks such as dusting, sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming

• Handle minimal laundry (preschool linens & cleaning cloths)

• Conduct floor care activities such as buffing, stripping, and waxing as needed

• Manage waste disposal and recycling according to church policies

• Assist with basic maintenance and facilities upkeep

• Ensure cleaning supplies and equipment are properly maintained and stored

• Report maintenance issues or safety hazards promptly

• Provide room setup services to support events or special projects

• Open and/or close facilities per the master calendar; monitor lights, heating, and air conditioning

Experience & Skills

• Previous custodial or janitorial experience preferred

• Familiarity with commercial cleaning practices and industrial cleaning techniques

• Experience in floor care (buffing, waxing) a plus

• Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions effectively

• Excellent time management and task prioritization skills

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
