A Report From Your Building Committee

On March 15th, 2011 the special Charge Conference empowered a new Building Committee to gather information for possible future remodeling plans for our church facilities. The committee made its presentation to the Church Council on September 6th. It gave a summary report to the congregation at the December 8, 2011 Annual Charge Conference. That PowerPoint presentation includes all the plan drawings and is available by clicking on the link below. Please view the PowerPoint presentation in “Normal” view so that you can see the presenter’s notes.

After the Charge Conference presentation, we displayed the drawings for the proposed plan during the Sunday coffee hour. We talked with many of you at that time, answering questions and listening to your comments. We heard comments like

  • It’s beautiful
  • I love the nice big Narthex
  • The covered entrance is a great idea
  • The plan design fits the current architecture very well
  • Where would the Library go? (to be determined)

As we worked on developing the plan, we were guided by the needs of the Congregation as determined by the Needs Analysis Task Force in 2010. We feel that our proposed plan addresses those needs and supports our desire to grow the Congregation. Examples:

  • The larger and more flexible Sanctuary and Narthex provide for improved worship and fellowship opportunities.
  • The plan successfully addresses the issues of ADA accessibility.
  • The plan creates a more open and inviting facility. A place where we would like to be for more than just one hour a week.
  • The design retains the character of our existing building.
  • The plan retains key proximities: Nursery, Revelation Room, SS classrooms.

Unfortunately, the estimated cost of $5.9 million is beyond what we can afford at this time. It’s actually more than twice what we ever expected it to be and more than twice what we could expect to raise in a capital campaign.

So where does that leave us? It leaves us right where we belong. In God’s hands.

This plan is a long term goal and we remain hopeful that it will someday become a reality. We ask that you pray for God’s guidance, being ever confident that He will lead us in the right direction.

For now, we need to focus on supporting our ongoing programs to help CUMC “Invite, Nurture, Serve”.

Thank you to all the Building Committee members for their genuine effort and hard work. They were a true inspiration for me. It was an honor and a joy to be able to work with these dedicated ministers for Christ: Jack Blank, Stacey Gannon, Betty Hunter, Joe Krechel, Susan Krechel, Brian Hight, Mary Warren, Sky Fuller, Lindsay Rudkin, Michelle Lenhoff, Anil Dewan, Ron Patterson

Please feel free to share your thoughts with any of us at any time.

Thank you, Brad Salzwedel
